Why is Green Card Draw So Important?

When you think of a green deck, chances are you’re picturing a deck that accelerates and deals tons of damage. Essentially, a deck that can get multiple lands out per turn, cast giant creatures early, and mash opponents to death using those giant creatures along with some trample sprinkled in here and there. And truth be told, that is a solid game plan. But what happens if you ramp out a ton of lands and play a couple creatures, and then find yourself with no cards left in your hand?

At that point, you will just be praying the top of your deck has useful spells to keep you in the game. In an ideal game, you will never run of out cards in your hand, but reality never is ideal. Decks that do no have ways to draw cards often end up being able to do very little as a game progresses. This highlights the importance of including some decent green card draw in your decks. Aside from casting some big fatties, you want to use your resources to also keep filling up your hand! This ensures you can not only keep casting spells, but potentially casting multiple spells per turn.

Best Green Card Draw

Some of the best spells for green card draw MTG has created are not only good, but relatively cheap as well. Sure, there are a bunch that are high dollar value, but don’t let the ‘cheap’ ones dissuade you from including them in your decks! For this guide, each section will have its own non-budget and budget sections. The way I determine the difference is non-budget are usually cards over $1 USD, and anything under $1 USD falls in the budget section. The different types of green card draw being discussed are:

  • Instant speed green card draw
  • Green card draw Sorcery spells
  • Artifacts & Enchantments with green card draw abilities
  • Green creatures that can draw you cards

On top of all of that, there is a little bonus Planeswalker section at the end that talks about a few ‘walkers, but mainly highlights a specific Garruk Planeswalker.

MTG Green Card Draw at Instant Speed

There are a ton of green card draw spells you can use at instant speed, but most of them are just okay spells, at best. There are a few standouts, however. In fact, my favorite green card draw spell ever is on this list (Return of the Wildspeaker). These spells will draw you cards, and draw them on your terms. No waiting until your turn, if you don’t want to.

Non-Budget

Return of the Wildspeaker, Momentous Fall & Benefactor’s Draught

All of these non-budget instant speed green card draw spells are amazing. For example, let’s just highlight Return of the Wildspeaker real quick to show how powerful these types of spells are. Not only can you draw an absurd amount of cards off it, you can also give all non-humans +3/+3 until end of turn if you’re looking to end the game! It has both versatility and functionality built in to it. The rest of the cards listed below are top-tier as well.

  • Benefactor’s Draught
    • Untap all creatures
    • Until end of turn, whenever a creature an opponent controls blocks, draw a card
    • Draw a card
  • Momentous Fall
    • As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature
    • You draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature’s power, then you gain life equal to its toughness
  • Return of the Wildspeaker
    • Choose one
      • Draw cards equal to the greatest power among non-Human creatures you control
      • Non-Human creatures you control get +3/+3 until end of turn
  • Veil of Summer
    • Draw a card if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn
    • Spells you control can’t be countered this turn
    • You and permanents you control gain hexproof from blue and from black until end of turn

Budget

Hunter’s Insight, Inspiring Call & Charge Through

In regards to budget green card draw spells at instant speed, there are tons of cards that cost 2 mana that will give a creature some sort of boost while also drawing you a card. But a few, such as Charge Through, costs a single green mana while boosting a creature and drawing a card. I really like Hunter’s Insight out of the bunch. If you have a large creature with trample that is attacking, cast this and potentially draw 5+ cards; crazy! Also, Inspiring Call is an excellent choice for any +1/+1 counters deck. Here are all of the budget instant speed green card draw spells you can include in your decks:

  • Charge Through
    • Target creature gains trample until end of turn
    • Draw a card
  • Hunter’s Insight
    • Choose target creature you control
    • Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker this turn, draw that many cards
  • Inspiring Call
    • Draw a card for each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it
    • Those creatures gain indestructible until end of turn
  • Viridescent Wisps
    • Target creature becomes green and gets +1/+0 until end of turn
    • Draw a card
  • Warriors’ Lesson
    • Until end of turn, up to two target creatures you control each gain “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card”

Here is a pre-populated list of all of those 2 mana instant speed green card draw spells I was mentioning.

Green Card Draw Sorcery Spells

The quality of green card draw sorcery spells is top-notch. These spells are typically stronger than the instant speed green card draw spells previously mentioned. Additionally, most of these spells not only draw you cards, but also give other benefits as well! While these sorceries are generally higher mana value, their impact can be backbreaking.

Non-Budget

3 of the best green card draw MTG has printed as sorcery spells under non-budget. Rishkar's Expertise, Life's Legacy & Glimpse of Nature
Rishkar’s Expertise, Life’s Legacy & Glimpse of Nature

The non-budget green card draw sorcery spells are all so good. These spells almost guarantee you will draw multiple cards at once. Last March of the Ents and Rishkar’s Expertise have a pretty high casting cost, but playing green, you should have no problem with mana in the middle to late stages of a game. Both of these cards also allow you to cheat out spells/creatures PLUS draw you some cards. Glimpse of Nature and Life’s Legacy are no slouch either and will give you a great green card draw source.

  • Glimpse of Nature
    • Whenever you cast a creature spell this turn, draw a card
  • Last March of the Ents
    • This spell can’t be countered
    • Draw cards equal to the greatest toughness among creatures you control, then put any number of creature cards from your hand onto the battlefield
  • Life’s Legacy
    • As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature
    • Draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature’s power
  • Rishkar’s Expertise
    • Draw cards equal to the greatest power among creatures you control
    • You may cast a spell with mana value 5 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost

Budget

Collective Unconscious, Shamanic Revelation & Explore

There are some might fine cards that fall in the budget category of green card draw sorcery spells. My favorite of this bunch is Shamanic Revelation. This card has single-handedly saved my skin so many times. While not a mono green deck, I have a Simic (blue/green) Sea Monster deck that I play this card in. Many times I will have 6+ large sea monsters on the battlefield and then cast Shamanic Revelation. Not only will I draw 5-6 cards, I’ll also end up gaining 20+ life! All of that for just 5 total mana; not a bad deal, in my opinion. All five of these green card draw spells are all-stars:

  • Collective Unconscious
    • Draw a card for each creature you control
  • Explore
    • You may play an additional land this turn
    • Draw a card
  • Harmonize
    • Draw three cards
  • Shamanic Revelation
    • Draw a card for each creature you control
    • You gain 4 life for each creature you control with power 4 or greater
  • Soul’s Majesty
    • Draw cards equal to the power of target creature you control

Green Card Draw MTG has Printed on Artifacts & Enchantments

Price is a major factor when discussing artifacts and enchantments with green card draw abilities. While the included budget options are still great cards, the included non-budget cards are absolute heavy hitters. Unfortunately, those cards come with a price tag to match. On a brighter note, artifacts and enchantments are typically not as frequently removed as creatures, so these cards have a good chance at sticking around for a while.

Non-Budget

3 of the best green card draw MTG has printed as abilities on artifacts & enchantments under non-budget. Garruk's Uprising, The Great Henge & Sylvan Library
Garruk’s Uprising, The Great Henge & Sylvan Library

These non-budget artifacts and enchantments with some of the best green card draw abilities on them are powerhouses. Any of these cards are auto-includes in your deck if you already own any of them, or are willing to pay the hefty price tag some of these cards command. I adore The Great Henge as it synergizes with creature-focused-decks so well. I also really like Garruk’s Uprising. With one of green’s specialties being humongous creatures, you’ll be drawing a ton of cards. Plus, all of your creatures get trample. Any one (or multiple) of these cards will ensure you’re drawing a ton of cards in your green decks:

  • Elemental Bond
    • Whenever a creature with power 3 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card
  • Garruk’s Uprising
    • When Garruk’s Uprising enters the battlefield, if you control a creature with power 4 or greater, draw a card
    • Creatures you control have trample
    • Whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card
  • Greater Good
    • Sacrifice a creature: Draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature’s power, then discard three cards
  • Guardian Project
    • Whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, if it doesn’t have the same name as another creature you control or a creature card in your graveyard, draw a card
  • Sylvan Library
    • At the beginning of your draw step, you may draw two additional cards
    • If you do, choose two cards in your hand drawn this turn
    • For each of those cards, pay 4 life or put the card on top of your library
  • Tribute to the World Tree
    • Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card if its power is 3 or greater
    • Otherwise, put two +1/+1 counters on it
  • The Great Henge
    • This spell costs X less to cast, where X is the greatest power among creatures you control
    • Tap: Add 2 green – you gain 2 life
    • Whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on it and draw a card
  • Up the Beanstalk
    • When Up the Beanstalk enters the battlefield and whenever you cast a spell with mana value 5 or greater, draw a card

Budget

Colossal Majesty, Snake Umbra & Enchantress’s Presence

The budget artifact and enchantment spells that have green card draw abilities attached to them are (for the most part) not nearly as good as the non-budget ones, but that is okay. These spells will still draw you cards. For example, think of Kenrith’s Transformation as purely a removal spell, with a bonus of being able to draw a card. Also, don’t sleep on Enchantress’s Presence as it is a super powerful card in any enchantment deck.

  • Colossal Majesty
    • At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control a creature with power 4 or greater, draw a card
  • Enchantress’s Presence
    • Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, draw a card
  • Kenrith’s Transformation
    • Enchant creature
    • When Kenrith’s Transformation enters the battlefield, draw a card
    • Enchanted creature loses all abilities and is a green Elk creature with base power and toughness 3/3
  • Snake Umbra
    • Enchant creature
    • Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has “Whenever this creature deals damage to an opponent, you may draw a card”
    • Totem armor

The Best Green Card Draw Abilities on Creatures

Another good source of green card draw comes from abilities on creatures. Similar to the artifacts and enchantments with green card draw abilities, price will dictate the ease and amount of cards you draw. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some very good budget options, it is just that the non-budget options are much better cards, obviously. The only downside to these cards is that they are easy targets for removal, and once removed, your source of card draw is gone.

Non-Budget

3 of the best green card draw MTG has printed as abilities on creatures under non-budget. Ohran Frostfang, Elder Gargaroth & Beast Whisperer
Ohran Frostfang, Elder Gargaroth & Beast Whisperer

There are so many amazing non-budget creatures with green card draw abilities on them. Any one of these mentioned below would be really good inclusions in your decks. I am a big fan of Elder Gargaroth. It is a beast (no pun intended) that has multiple abilities, including card draw, that trigger whenever it attacks or blocks. I also really like Toski, Bearer of Secrets, mainly because I do not own a copy of Ohran Frostfang. Truth be told, Ohran Frostfang is probably the better card out of the two, but both are really good, together or on their own.

  • Beast Whisperer
    • Whenever you cast a creature spell, draw a card
  • Elder Gargaroth
    • Vigilance, reach, trample
    • Whenever Elder Gargaroth attacks or blocks, choose one
      • Create a 3/3 green Beast creature token
      • You gain 3 life
      • Draw a card
  • Ohran Frostfang
    • Attacking creatures you control have deathtouch
    • Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, draw a card
  • Regal Force
    • When Regal Force enters the battlefield, draw a card for each green creature you control
  • Runic Armasaur
    • Whenever an opponent activates an ability of a creature or land that isn’t a mana ability, you may draw a card
  • Toski, Bearer of Secrets
    • This spell can’t be countered
    • Indestructible
    • Toski, Bearer of Secrets attacks each combat if able
    • Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, draw a card
Non-Budget – Enchantment Decks

If you are playing an enchantment-focused deck, these are nearly mandatory inclusions to ensure you green card draw strategy. Essentially, every time you cast an enchantment, you’ll be drawing a card for each one of these on the battlefield.

  • Argothian Enchantress
    • Shroud
    • Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, draw a card
  • Eidolon of Blossoms
    • Whenever Eidolon of Blossoms or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card
  • Setessan Champion
    • Whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on Setessan Champion and draw a card
  • Verduran Enchantress
    • Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, you may draw a card

Budget

3 of the best green card draw MTG has printed as abilities on creatures under budget. Garruk's Packleader, Soul of the Harvest & Wall of Blossoms
Garruk’s Packleader, Soul of the Harvest & Wall of Blossoms

When it comes to budget green card draw abilities on creatures, Garruk’s Packleader and Soul of the Harvest are the standouts in my opinion. If they sticks around for a while, both Garruk’s Packleader and Soul of the Harvest can draw you a bunch of cards at a steady pace. Here is the list of budge creatures with green card draw abilities attached to them:

  • Elvish Visionary
    • When Elvish Visionary enters the battlefield, draw a card
  • Garruk’s Packleader
    • Whenever another creature with power 3 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card
  • Llanowar Visionary
    • When Llanowar Visionary enters the battlefield, draw a card
    • Tap: Add 1 green
  • Soul of the Harvest
    • Trample
    • Whenever another nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card
  • Wall of Blossoms
    • Defender
    • When Wall of Blossoms enters the battlefield, draw a card

Bonus Green Card Draw: A Garruk Planeswalker?

The best green card draw MTG has printed as abilities on a Planeswalker is Garruk, Primal Hunter

There are a couple of green Planeswalkers that have card draw abilities on them, but the best one, in my opinion is Garruk, Primal Hunter. This Planeswalker has a starting loyalty of 3 and cost 3 green and 2 generic, for a total of 5 mana and has the following abilities attached to it:

  • +1: Create a 3/3 green Beast creature token.
  • −3: Draw cards equal to the greatest power among creatures you control.
  • −6: Create a 6/6 green Wurm creature token for each land you control.

Let’s assume you have a beefy creature on the battlefield, and let’s be honest, in green that should be pretty easy. At worst, this is a 5 mana, draw multiple cards spell, essentially, assuming you immediately kill it for its -3 ability.

At best, this is a creature generator and card drawing machine. I love Planeswalkers that can be cast and can immediately create a creature to protect itself. And this Garruk Planeswalker can do just that. The first turn you play it, unless you are in dire need of cards, you should probably use its +1 ability to bring its loyalty up to 4. Then the turn after you played it, use that -3 ability and start the card draw!

Other Planeswalkers that have green card draw attached to them are Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury, Nissa, Vital Force and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. The downside with these Planeswalkers is that they cannot draw you cards immediately like Garruk, Primal Hunter can as they require quite a bit more loyalty to use their card draw abilities than what they start with.

Final Thoughts

As you can see from this article, there are no shortages green card draw spells. First up, a nice collection of instant speed green card draw, both budget friendly options and non-budget options.
